How to Plan Your Training Around Your Busy Schedule
Finding time to run can be a challenge if you have an unconventional work schedule. However, with some creativity and determination, even the busiest runners can train to improve and reach their goals.
In a recent coaching call, two runners with unconventional work hours discussed how they fit running into their busy lives and shared strategies to upgrade their training. Jeff, a web designer, works 40 hours week and is at his desk most of the time. Angela, works as a registered dietitian at a local hospital is on her feet for most of the day.
Regardless of your work schedule, fitting in running is a choice that requires prioritization. Jeff and Angela are excellent examples of setting priorities in training. We discussed how they can become more efficient with their training without sacrificing sleep and recovery. Some strategies included:
- Dominating your sleep for optimal performance
- Using cross-training to transition to higher running volumes
- Incorporating short, focused runs with limited time
- Incorporating strength training when you have a physically demanding job
- Adding short, additional runs to increase endurance
